EMPAF Conference: “Passion, Partnerships and Empowering People”

My first visit to Derby and venture into the participatory arts networks of East Midlands, at the Quad arts centre. A good introduction!

Highlights of the day included a very touching and thought-provoking portrait of Mary Neal, the Esperance Club and how 'she got people dancing' by her Great Great Niece Lucy Neal.
'What is culture? Who does it belong to? What is the role of creativity in tradition? What is the role of tradition in creativity?' - questions as relevant today as 100 years ago.
And the essence of the transformative magic of participatory arts suggested in a couple of quotes from Mary:
'Isolation is death only in union is life'  'The artist is the only hope in the world for we are all in the soup'
In epitaph, "Deep as the Universe is my Life and I Know It"
