Arduino workshops with Change

Introduction to physical computing with the Arduino

A one day hands-on introductory physical computing workshop specifically designed for beginners to this field. Participants will learn how to hook up off-the-shelf sensors to a computer using an Arduino microcontroller.
Dates: Tuesday 1 June, 2010, Lighthouse, Brighton.
Overview: This is a one-day hands-on introductory physical computing workshop specifically designed for beginners to this field. It is aimed at students and members of the public (maximum 15) interested in learning about physical computing. All participants will need to bring along a laptop (Mac or PC) and we'll supply everything else.
Who's it for: students and members of the public interested in learning about physical computing.
Previous experience: participants don't need to have any previous experience of electronics or programming, but it would be helpful if they knew how to use a software package such as Photoshop or Dreamweaver.
Number of participants: maximum 15
Cost: the event is funded by the EPSRC CHANGE project and is free for participants.

Better living through technology

A two day hands-on physical computing workshop run by thePervasive Interaction Lab, Open University and High-Low Tech Group, MIT Media Lab.
Dates: Wednesday 2 June and Thursday 3 June, 2010, Lighthouse, Brighton.
Overview: We all know we should exercise, eat well, keep in touch with our families, and consider how our behaviour impacts on the environment. But it’s terribly easy to procrastinate, forget, and indulge. How can technology help us bridge the gap between who we are and who we want to be? Through a series of prototyping and brainstorming activities this two day physical computing workshop will explore ways that technology can help us understand and change our patterns of behavior. We will be building systems using off-the-shelf sensors and actuators and Arduino microcontrollers.
Who’s it for: PhD students and postdocs.
Previous experience: participants are expected to have some experience of programming and using microcontrollers, for example, Arduinos.
Number of participants: maximum 15.
Cost: the event is funded by the EPSRC CHANGE project and is free for participants. We have some funding for travel and accommodation expenses for participants living in the UK.
