I gave a presentation in the morning panel on Residential Building and the Environment.
I'd wondered how well the paper would sit with the others in that panel - which were quite diverse titles. Actually there was a great continuity, with the first presentation focusingon alternative models of user engagement with design, essentially a community building process (it seemed to me) between architects and users of housing...The second was a fascinating presentation about land ritual and the rapid transition of a population from rural to urban (reversing the 80:20 proportion of the community in just 17 years) by anthropologist about his 3 year field work in Chile. And so Soundlines picked up on these points of creative engagement/ownership and personal connection within the shared experience of landscape and event/ceremony. The final presenter discussed planning and sustainability issues of rural China, showing an interesting case study of the village of Xiaobao in which redevelopment was taking place within the original pattern of the existing village. Yanhui Lei referred to rural pattern in traditional papercutting, and the significance of 4 key elements within the pattern, that could be understood to hold the key to structure within rural life -vvery different to the structures within modern urban life or architectural design. This contrasted with a photograph of a modern sustainabke development - sustainability focusing solely on energy consumprion, with rows of duplicate executive houses topped by solar panels filling a forested valley - little consideration of relationship to physical or social environment.
