Lunchtime talk at the Pervasive Media Studio :
"Émilie Grenier is a Canadian artist working with wearable open source technologies. Exploring concepts of broken narrative and storytelling, her work seeks to provoke users and challenge their assumptions about their surrounding environment.
In her Lunchtime Talk, Emilie will explore soft circuitry - or case studies and examples of work which mix textiles and electronics.
Emilie has been awarded the Studio's cross-European residency programme and will spend the next four months working with Duncan Speakman to develop a new sonic artwork. In the past she has been a research fellow on augmented reality (AR), and gained a master’s degree in film and new media."
Really enjoyable and interesting talk, with lovely examples of Emelie's work & collaborative textiles with varying components of electronics, OS hard and soft ware, solar panels (including a jewellery circuit collection) audio, time & text, photochromatic and thermochromatic fabric inks, interaction and wearability... glue gun lace and magical forests that appear and disappear. The weather (-30 in Montreal now) and sociable adaptable interaction are interesting influences on the way works made and shared - quilts that become tents in trees, with mittens to clap and play hand games. And the capes with accelerometers to sense movement and trigger narratives or just house an mp3 and earphones.
I was struck by the concise presentation of numbered projects, projects with boundaries! I wonder how much that comes from the intricate scale of some of the work, or if it's from collective work focusing on specific project briefs/opportunities/events. Or from her position stated of approaching the work from a design perspective. Or because of the focal point of the object in each project. Whatever, I think it's a useful thing to think about, and I look forward to seeing the website and portfolio that accompany it.
I've invited Emelie to collaborate on my woodland walk with Living Voice ...... love the idea of walkers with wearables that complement their headphones and reveal images in different conditions - outside and in.
