Bristol Buzz

Good to spend a couple of days in Bristol catching up with friends, bouncing ideas around, a bit of arts award work (always a pleasure to see what interesting arts activities young people are up to for the award) and some time soaking in the enjoyable ambience of the PMStudio.

A mix of things in the air for me..
Preparation for Text Making and Unmaking, introducing the grids and questions exercise (from my intervention at Sideshow) with a few people at the studio with a view to further creative conversations around transdisciplinary research. A very helpful talk-through with Jo Reid about the possibilities for migrating the Milton cemetery tour onto iphone using Calvium's toolset.
Making arrangements for a visit to the Yorkshire Dales to 'find my feet' and explore the area for the art geocache commission, and some rather open-sky thinking about how it might develop, building on colour grids with hidden caches of wax crayons (nice idea, thanks Jo) to mobile apps and everything in between. Next step will be to arrange a short taste of activity to explore and brainstorm some of the technical development.

Interesting to get along to Friday's open studio lunchtime talk with Jo Reid
and great to hear about the success of work involved behind the scenes of Calvium's new Tower of London iphone app. (one of the first things I'd downloaded to start my new collection!)
The talk was also a useful reminder of all the things to take into account when designing for location-aware experiences,  timely as I'm planning the art geocache.

"Calvium Creative Director and Studio Resident Jo Reid will introduce us to Calvium’s latest project Escape from the Tower, one of the first iPhone apps created with the alpha version of the Calvium platform. In her talk, Jo will describe the history of working with Historic Royal Palaces on a game designed to engage families through re-enacting history during their visit to the Tower of London.
The talk will cover the development from initial conversations to the finished product. Included will be user feedback, lessons learned and general Experience Design pointers. We strongly recommend it to everybody interested in creating location-based experiences."
