This past week was the third Avanca |Cinema conference - cinema, art, communication, technology, at Avanca, Portugal, and my second time attending (and presenting at) the conference.
The colour grid above celebrated an unusual opening - after a very short introduction (in Portuguese) we were treated to a short recital by the most wonderful guitar player (whose name I didn't catch). The explanation given later was that music is important to cinema. For me, music here was such a wonderful antidote - not to neutralise but rather to complement - the many words that would follow (around 250 papers to be presented over the 5 day conference). Space opened up in the moments between resonant strings.
I was the first speaker in the English-speaking panel following on from official openings and conference lunch, so this beautiful, sensitive start was not lost on me! Our panel was an interesting mixture of the impact of technology on structure, content and interaction with film/media.
A very interesting set of papers related to technology this year. Also better programming so that conference delegates could watch a good proportion of the film festival screenings - should they not mind the 9.30 am start and 1.30am finish! (Followed by a half hour bus journey to accommodation as Avanca has only a few rooms, at a hotel new this year.)
It was great to meet some people from Avanca 11 and even ISEA 11, as well as the organisers, IJC team and lots of new people from around the world. My short visit was well worthwhile not only for all the art, technology,cinema and communication, but also as a reminder of the particular quality generated at this event with it's rather unique mix of festival, workshop, conference, education, agriculture and warm hospitality.
